Bomber Families, After talking with the National Weather Service a few moments ago, our forecast is increasing in severity. I am concerned about the dangerous weather conditions as well as potential flooding if we wait to dismiss at our regularly-scheduled time. With that in mind, Mountain Home Public Schools will release at 12:45 today. I encourage you all to use a high level of caution for the remainder of the afternoon and evening, as conditions look to be severe. Note: Flight Crew will be cancelled as well. Thank you, Allyson Dewey Superintendent

Today is Paraprofessional Appreciation Day! We could not have school without our paraprofessionals! They are the very best and are a critical piece of daily school life. They assist in providing meaningful interventions, teach essential skills, support academic learning, provide safe environments by supervising students, and so much more! We always hope they feel valued and appreciated! We asked some staff members to describe our paraprofessionals, and here are some of the responses we received: positive, magnetic, support development of essential skills, natural leaders, love a challenge, empathetic, tender-hearted, help to close achievement gaps, compassionate, smart, loyal, faithful, patient, gentle, gracious, ray of sunshine, encourage risk taking in learning. The work of the professional is ongoing, and we couldn’t do it without them! Thank you!

Reminder for Families: On March 20, our Board of Education approved a calendar amendment that made May 23 a full day of school. This adjustment was made to add back a few hours to our calendar due to an early dismissal in January. Here's a link to the updated calendar showing May 23 as a full school day! https://core-docs.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/2418/mhsd/4386037/2024-2025_School_Calendar_board_approved_2.15.24.pdf

Mountain Home Junior High staff collaborated to create a cross-curricular unit based on the novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” Students acted out one of the scenes in the book: whitewashing a fence the way Tom did. Science classes made posters about the medicinal remedies that would have been used in that time period. Art students created grave stones as a way to bring the book’s graveyard scene to life. Business classes calculated how much the boo’s “treasure” would have been worth today. Arkansas History classes researched the area where the book was based, and American History students created poster displays as a final project. The unit was topped off with a trip to Blanchard Springs Caverns, which gave the students an experience similar to the cave scene in the book. We are so proud of the hard work of both students and staff on this project!

February's FSB leadership award winner was James Breedlove. Here is why he was selected as the winner for the month: "James is always smiling and has a positive attitude when he comes to class. It doesn't matter how much work we have to do or how hard it is, he is always ready to work. James finishes his work, asks what else he can do when he is done and often spends his extra class time helping others around him that do not understand. James is an amazing young man and deserves this award." Congratulations to James and big thanks to First Security Bank for this kind gesture each month!

Congratulations to our own 8th grade mathematician, Eliza Obert! Eliza attended the talent identification program at the Arkansas School for Math, Sciences, and the Arts in January, where she, along with 62 others, took the AMC-8 math exam. Eliza had the highest score of all 8th graders who tested, and her performance on the exam placed her in second overall. We are so proud!

Congratulations to junior high student Haley Cardoza for receiving a recognition award from her bus driver! From her certificate: "This recognition award is being presented to Haley Cardoza due to the great compassion she shows for other students on the school bus. When a fellow passenger is upset or there is a dispute, Haley has stepped up to help mediate. Driver Diane Slinkman of Bus Route 51 appreciates this help, as it makes the route so much smoother. This kind of compassion for other students is commendable and appreciated." Our drivers love and appreciate their passengers, and this recognition is just one way they celebrate them! Congratulations to Oakley Recktenwald (8th grade), who was nominated and selected to be the January First Security Bank Leadership Award recipient! Here's what was shared about Oakley: Oakley is the ideal student to earn "Student of the Month." He is an incredible young man who works diligently to achieve his best. He is incredibly honest and if there is an error or misjudgment, he takes time to evaluate what was done, understand it from the other person's point-of-view, and take accountability. In addition, Oakley is confident in a way that is not boastful or arrogant. He knows his capabilities and uses them not just for himself, but to assist others. This allows him to stand up for what he believes in and help others understand where he is coming from; however, he is not one to try to force them to agree with him, he is always open to listening, and accepts others for who they are . Oakley is willing to step out of his comfort zone. We recently started a debate club this year and he was one of the 1st 8th graders to join. In addition, he was the first 8th grade person to participate in an actual debate. This was not only done in front of his peers, but in addition, 9th graders also evaluated. For an 8th grader, this is definitely a step out of the comfort zone. Oakley is one of the only students I have who comes to me after an assignment and wants to know what he specifically missed and how to correct it in the future. He works hard in his sports accomplishments; however, his dedication to his academics is beyond impressive. He is consistently showing how he wants to grow as a student and leader. He is truly a deserving recipient of this award.

Child Cell Phone Use Facts:

Cell phone use causes cyberbullying and affects mental health: The rise of social media exposes children to the risk of cyberbullying, contributing to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Many children who have been cyber-bullied may only talk about their experience much later in life when the mental damage has already been done.
