Mountain Home's GATE Program Overview
The Mountain Home School District offers programs in grades kindergarten through twelve for those students who have been identified as having needs above and beyond what the curriculum in the regular classroom offers. Recognizing that gifted and talented students have special needs and require special opportunities to fulfill their potential, the district is committed to providing the type of educational program(s) that will offer these opportunities. This commitment is shared by all members of the educational community.
Kindergarten - Students meet with the gifted and talented specialist once a month for 30 minutes. Kindergarten teachers provide at least one 30 minute enrichment lesson per week in their classrooms.
Grades 1 - 2: Students meet with the gifted and talented specialist every week for a 30 minute enrichment lesson. Enrichment lessons consist of higher order thinking skills, problem solving, creative thinking, and research.
Grades 3-5: Identified gifted students are pulled out of the regular classroom each week for 150 minutes to meet with the gifted and talented specialist. Students use this time to explore advanced topics beyond the core curriculum or to focus on accelerated learning in their chosen subjects.
Grades 6-7: Identified gifted students have the option to take the GT Explore elective (150 minutes week) which is facilitated by the gifted and talented specialist. During this time, students engage in enriched learning experiences, either delving deeper into core subjects or accelerating in their areas of passion.
Grades 6-12: Identified gifted students are required to take at least one core honor's course to receive their 150 minutes per week. Additionally, students are encouraged to challenge themselves by taking as many honors and/or AP courses as they feel capable of handling. The gifted and talented specialists will offer monthly meetings for students in grades 6-12 to attend. These meetings cover various topics: social and emotional needs, preparing for college & career, creativity, etc.
Students are given numerous opportunities for competitions, such as art and poster contests, essay and poetry contests, Spelling Bee, Quiz Bowl, Chess tournaments, Stock Market Game, and more. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in the many clubs and organizations found at each building as well as GATE field trips.
